Elastix is unified communications server software with IP PBX, email, IM, faxing, and collaboration functionalities. It has two versions: Elastix 2.5, a free software released under the GNU General Public License; and Elastix 5.0, a proprietary released under the 3CX license.
Elastix was first released to the public in March 2006 by creator PaloSanto Solutions, an Ecuador-based Open Source support company. It was initially circulated as a web interface for call detail records reporting.
In December 2006, Elastix was released as a Linux distribution together with software like Asterisk and ZapTel. All these have one common factor: they can be easily managed through a user-friendly web interface.
3CX acquired Elastix in 2016, leading to the development of Elastix 5.0, a Debian-based proprietary that’s compatible with the 3CX platform. Debian is one of the oldest operating systems in the world, thus giving Elastix 5.0 the most comprehensive support channels. Elastix 5.0 is available in four editions – free, standard, pro, and enterprise – all depending on the user’s business needs.
Elastix 5.0 is described as a phone system suitable for any small business. It can be deployed on-premise as a VM or on a mini-appliance, or in the cloud via Google Cloud, OVH, and other similar applications. It’s also easy to manage and install as it does not require any dedicated personnel or hardware. For IP phones, gateways, and SIP trunks, a simple plug-and-play installation will do.
Setting up Elastix 5.0 only takes minutes as many of its PBX elements are automated. It also does not take a lot of time to manage extensions and upgrade IP phone firmware from the management console. It is also configured securely out of the box to protect users against VoIP hackers.
Elastix offers unified communications at no extra cost. Users can integrate desktops, smartphones, chats, faxes, voices, and emails in their phone system. It also has integrated WebRTC technology that makes web conferencing and virtual meetings a lot easier to conduct, thanks to its remote control and screen sharing features.
The software is available for free for up to eight simultaneous calls or approximately 25 users. Similarly, the web conferencing feature is free for up to five participants.
Elastix has been nominated in 2007 and 2008 as a finalist in the SourceForge Community Choice Awards. It was also hailed as SourceForge’s Project of the Month in April 2012.
In 2014, Elastix won TMC’s Internet Telephony Product of the Year Award, together with other distinguished software like Overture 6500, Nextiva Office, and LiveOps Exchange.
