About Microsoft Lync
Microsoft, the developer of Microsoft Lync, is a Redmond, Washington-based technology company known for its software. Founded in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, Microsoft has been making operating systems since 1980. Microsoft Windows, a graphical extension for MS-DOS, was released in 1985. Due in part to the success of Microsoft Windows, the company went public in 1986. Microsoft Office, a suite of productivity products, was released for the first time in 1990. To expand the number of productivity products in Microsoft Office, Office Communicator was added to the suite in 2007. Over the next three years, Office Communicator was refined as R2 and then released as Microsoft Lync in 2010. For the next four years, Lync was the company’s business communication tool and Skype, purchased by Microsoft in 2011, focused on consumer communication. In 2014, Lync and Skype were renamed Skype for Business and incorporated a new user interface. The communications systems are only a small part of Microsoft technology. Microsoft has constantly expanded its suite of technology products, adding the Xbox game console, Microsoft Surface tablet, and cloud-based programs like Microsoft Azure.
Although Microsoft has expanded far beyond software, the company is still best-known for its Windows operating system (OS) and Microsoft Office program suite. Windows 10, released in 2015, is the latest operating system. Microsoft Word, the text processing software in the Office suite, has become the standard word processor in many industries. Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint are also popular tools for spreadsheets and presentations, respectively. Microsoft also provides popular business email software called Outlook. One of the benefits of the Lync communications software was its ability to integrate with Outlook. A conference could be scheduled in the Outlook calendar and held in Lync. Although Lync’s name has changed to Skype for Business, this integration with other Office products is still a feature. Other popular Microsoft products include the Xbox gaming console and the Microsoft Surface tablet.
Microsoft is an award-winning company that regularly appears on the Fortune 500. It is also often ranked on the list of the World’s Most Admired Companies. The list of industry awards for Microsoft is substantial. At the 1999 COMDEX conference alone, Microsoft won 17 awards for product excellence. As a leader in the technology industry, Microsoft often awards smaller companies that provide integrations for technology like Skype for Business.
